Letter to
President and Director, Hokkaido Electric Power Co. Inc. Yoshitaka Sato
We herewith request you to immediately shut down Tomari nuclear power plant in Hokkaido, Japan.

The accident which happened following Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the 11th of March, 2011 demonstrated that there is a high risk that a similar accident could happen in other nuclear power plants in Japan, a country that frequently experiences earthquakes. Tomari nuclear power plant is one of them. Professor Mitsuhisa Watanabe from Tokyo University in Japan reported in October 2009, “A zone 60-70km long of active fault lines lies below the surface 15km off shore of Iwanai, Hokkaido. This is the closest fault line to the Tomari nuclear power plant, which could potentially cause an earthquake above magnitude 7.5. This implies that there is a risk whereby Tomari nuclear power plant could be next Fukushima Daiichi.

We are taking this potential risk seriously and appealing for total abolition of nuclear power plants in
Tomari. Those of us who live in the city have used electricity without thinking of the cost or safety of the people in Tomari as well as the nature and the sea around Tomari nuclear power plants. Simultaneously, it cannot be justified that we who live today by using nuclear energy should do so at the cost of the security of future generations. The disaster at Fukushima Daiichi is exposing not only the people in the affected areas and the staff who are struggling to restore the nuclear power plants at cost of their own lives, but also all the people in Japan and in the world.

We therefore request you to immediately shut down Tomari nuclear power plants, taking into consideration the facts mentioned above.

Thank you for your support,

Shut Down Tomari–SHUTT!
