Shut Down the UW's Primate Research Center After Monkeys Died from Preventable Errors
The Issue
Right now, pregnant monkeys are being injected with the Zika virus at the University of Washington National Primate Research Center. Their fetuses are surgically removed. Brain tissue is extracted. And the researcher running these experiments has been caught administering the wrong drugs — not once, but repeatedly, over two full years — with no consequences whatsoever.
Ten monkeys died because of a preventable error. Others have been subjected to experiments so poorly conducted that the data was unusable, meaning their suffering produced nothing. No knowledge. No benefit. Nothing but loss.
When the university's own animal care committee was told about the latest mistake, they called it a "rare instance" and moved on. No suspension. No halt to the experiments. No accountability for the animals who paid the price.
These are sentient beings. Macaques are intelligent, social, emotional animals who experience fear, pain, and grief. They did not choose to be there. They have no voice in what is done to them. And the institution entrusted with their care has failed them, again and again, while collecting tens of millions in federal funding.
We are calling on the National Institutes of Health's Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare to launch a full investigation into the University of Washington National Primate Research Center and suspend all ongoing experiments until that investigation is complete.
No more wrong drugs. No more avoidable deaths. No more suffering written off as a "rare instance."
