The Madison County Detention Center (MCDC) in Richmond, KY has long been a source of personal pain and frustration. A shadow over Madison county. Over the years, this facility has been responsible for several tragic deaths, including an incident as recent as January of this year. Such a pattern of negligence and abuse is not only alarming but also unacceptable.

MCDC holds the notorious distinction of having the second highest inmate death rate among all jails in the state of Kentucky. This statistic is a stark indicator of the systemic problems that plague this institution. For those of us with loved ones or acquaintances housed within MCDC, the fear of losing them due to abuse or neglect is an ever-present reality. The stories of rampant mistreatment and negligence can no longer be ignored.

It is imperative that we demand immediate action from local and state authorities to address the crisis at MCDC. The abuse of fundamental human rights within this facility cannot continue. We must pressure the appropriate agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the operations and practices at MCDC. This investigation should encompass the causes of these numerous deaths and instances of mistreatment. The ultimate goal must be the closure of MCDC. 

A safer, more humane alternative must be sought for those who are currently incarcerated within MCDC. Shutting down this detention center is crucial as part of a broader reform of the criminal justice and incarceration systems within Kentucky. The state needs to invest in facilities that rehabilitate rather than deprive inmates, and in personnel who are trained to treat inmates with respect and dignity.

The taxpayers of Madison County and the residents of Richmond, Berea, Waco, and surrounding areas deserve to have their tax money spent on things that benefit their community. Schools, roads, proper policing, emergency response services, and creating a county environment safe from the abuse of corrupt people in positions of power. Currently this money is being used to support a facility that has negatively impacted the lives of too many who have entered its walls.
