Shut Down the Hazardous Tire Dump in Douglass, Memphis

Shut Down the Hazardous Tire Dump in Douglass, Memphis
The Issue
Living in Douglass, Memphis, TN, we have experienced the adverse effects of the tire dump in our community firsthand, especially since those who live on Carpenter Street. They are extremely close to this hazardous site. The massive accumulation of millions of old, used tires poses a significant threat to our health and well-being.
These tires are not just eyesores; they are breeding grounds for pests. Tires have an uncanny ability to collect water and debris, creating ideal habitats for insects and rodents. In particular, old tires with stagnant water are prime breeding sites for mosquitoes, which are known carriers of life-threatening diseases such as West Nile Virus, Zika, and encephalitis. The shape and heat retention properties of tires allow mosquitoes to hatch much faster than in other locations, amplifying the risk to our community.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underline the severity of these diseases. For instance, from 1999 to 2019, there were over 50,000 cases of West Nile Virus reported in the United States, with severe cases resulting in more than 2,300 deaths. Zika and encephalitis also present severe health threats, particularly to young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
We need an immediate and effective solution to this growing risk in our neighborhood. We call on local government officials and relevant environmental agencies to take urgent action to shut down this tire dump and clean up our community. Removing these tires will not only enhance the aesthetic value of our living environment but will also significantly reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases.
Let's advocate for a cleaner, safer Douglass, Memphis. For the sake of our families and the health of future generations, please lend your voice to this vital cause. Sign the petition today to help us eliminate this dangerous hazard from our community.
