The Issue

Four healthy stray dogs, Martha, Kalindi, Ujjwala and Jia were boarded at Tails of the City Pet Boarding Service in Vadodara (1, Shriji Krupa Society, Gotri Road), Gujarat, for post-operative care after spaying at a private vet. Entrusted to the care of Vishal, also known as Kishan Kumar, these dogs were expected to recover in a safe environment, where he mentioned keeping them in air conditioned rooms. Tragically, the events that unfolded have left us in shock and despair.

On September 27, Kalindi mysteriously disappeared. The facility was thought to be secure, with high boundary walls preventing any possibility of escape. When we asked for CCTV footage, Vishal claimed that the cameras were not operational, which contradicts his earlier statement that he saw Kalindi escaping in the CCTV footage. This is suspicious about what truly goes on behind closed doors at this boarding service.

Though promised excellent care, Vishal kept us in the dark that he had kept our dogs on the terrace, because they were stray dogs! In that partially cloth covered terrace, an open route to escape and a cooler throwing hot air, no food, no water, conditions became claustrophobic, leading to heat exhaustion for the dogs.

❗️Ujjwala died on Sept 30th due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

❗️Martha died on October 1st due to heat exhaustion, dehydration and suspected tetanus.

However, Vishal has no regret, no remorse and has tendered no apology that two dogs died under his care while the third one still remains missing, who shouldn't have escaped in the first place, had he not kept them on the terrace. He believes there is nothing wrong in keeping strays on the terrace in the heat, while the pedigree dogs are kept on the ground floor with the fans and AC turned on.

It is gross animal cruelty and discrimination that has resulted in agonizing deaths and disappearance.

He is NOW justifying keeping strays on the terrace by charging only 600 rupees a day as against 1000 rupees a day for pedigree dogs, but he does not share that he subjects stray dogs to inhuman and savage treatment at his facility by keeping them on a terrace that burns like a furnace and the partial cloth cover makes ventilation difficult.

It has been a huge mental trauma for us as we are unable to cope with what happened with Kalindi, Ujjwala and Martha, their needless suffering and deaths. Their packs in the community have taken a huge emotional blow as well. Their lives and ours have been dented forever.

Instead of the release of these dogs back to their respective places with their pack, it has been about back to back burials and a big question mark as to what happened to Kalindi. We suspect she must have sustained major injuries when she jumped from the terrace and her mere four days old sutures must have opened, resulting in her death. God knows what Vishal did to her body.

We have filed a police complaint with the DGP Gujarat with a request for it's conversion to an FIR for swift action.

We also fear for our lives in the long run because this is a big mafia. His boarding facility is also home to many men who work as dog groomers and dog walkers in Baroda. Infact, one of the men at the boarding facility tried to physically assault Dr. Kuhu Roy, when she countered them, but was stopped by others.

We demand immediate action. It's imperative to shut down Tails of the City Pet Boarding Service and conduct a thorough investigation into Vishal's practices. Moreover, he must be held accountable by law for the trauma and harm inflicted on Martha, Kalindi and Ujjwala that cost them their lives and the mental trauma that is hounding us.

If you stand in solidarity with us seeking justice for the precious lives of Kalindi, Martha and Ujjwala, please sign the petition and share it in your network.

We would sincerely appreciate your support as we navigate through this storm.

Sincerely,
Dr. Kuhu Roy and Mrs. Hansa Roy | Directors, the Bridging Rainbows Foundation

PS: Jia, the fourth precious one boarded at the facility, was rescued and we adopted her to help her recover from the trauma and give her a good life.
