SHUT DOWN - SIDE, LAND OF LIONS, ANTALYA, TURKEY NOW
The Issue
I was on holiday last week & booked an excursion which consisted of this zoo at the end.
Never have I been so upset to see animals like this.
The animals within this zoo are so underweight, starving, filthy & have absolutely NOTHING in their enclosures.
Only some enclosures had water which was dirty & the animals were fighting each other to get the tiny bits of what looked like luncheon meat thrown in - clearly starved!
They had 3 camels in a tiny enclosure with 2 doing rides throughout the day and the other was stomping and swaying up and down clearly distressed with no water and a tiny hut to go in for shade. There's no way 3 would have fit in there!
They had 4 wolves with filthy water, seriously underweight, nothing for them to play with and a small enclosure. They were trying to drink from the edge of the bucket because the water was so disgusting.
The flamingo's enclosure had a puddle of water, while others nearby were complaining they had none.
The lions had absolutely nothing in their enclosure except a podium. No enrichment, no water, nothing. The male lion was stunning, but you saw his spine and ribs.
The 3 young bears. No water, no shade and were scratching at the wall for food, again all skinny and looked filthy.
The holding of the lions. My children loved the experience but the way they handled those poor babies grabbing their jaws and pulling their ears to pose for pictures making them stay in the same place was infuriating!
I have never been so disgusted in myself for supporting this by attending but i didn't know the conditions until there. Many people were complaining whilst there and I really hope more people speak up about this because I won't stop until these starved, poorly treated animals get what they deserve.
Lets get these poor animals a life they deserve and get them out!!!!!
Just some statistics of captive animals in Turkey for you -
Poor Conditions and Oversight: Many shelters suffer from inadequate care, leading to starvation, dehydration, and lack of medical attention
Limited Shelter Availability: Out of 1,408 municipalities surveyed, only 273 have animal shelters, and at least 26 operate without licenses.
Approximately 838 municipalities either lack shelters or did not provide information on their shelter status.
