Shut down Hixson High School till mold is removed
The Issue
I have been a student at Hixson High School, and, sadly, my health has paid the price. Just recently, I fell ill, and after speaking with several classmates, I discovered I wasn’t alone. Many of us have been feeling the effects of the mold problem that has been plaguing our school. The mold has not only affected me and my peers but has also raised serious concerns among parents, teachers, and the local community in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Mold exposure is not something that should be taken lightly. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exposure to mold can lead to various health problems, including stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or skin rash. For some, it may even trigger asthma attacks or worse. The presence of mold in our school creates an unsafe environment for students and staff alike, posing serious risks to their immediate and long-term health.
Our school needs to be a place where we feel safe and secure, a place where our focus can be on learning and growing, not worrying about getting sick. The solution is clear: Hixson High School needs to be temporarily shut down to allow for a complete and thorough mold remediation. This process would involve the careful identification and elimination of all mold and moisture sources, followed by proper cleaning and maintenance to prevent the mold from returning.
By addressing this problem now, we can prevent further sickness and ensure that our school is fit for education. We urge the Hamilton County Department of Education to take immediate action and prioritize the health and safety of students and staff by approving this temporary closure for comprehensive mold cleansing.
Join us in calling on the decision-makers to protect our future and provide us with a safe learning environment. Please sign this petition to support the urgent need for a mold-free Hixson High School.
