The Issue

In 2022, I witnessed something distressing at Gittlers Aquarium and Aviary: a helpless underage kitten confined to a wire mesh rodent cage without any bedding. The poor creature cried endlessly. Despite my efforts in reporting this heart-wrenching situation to the local police, nothing was done. More recently, my visits revealed a dreadful scene—a dead turtle on display in a filthy aquarium. The animal cages were in appalling conditions, and I even found a food container left open on the dirty floor. These grave issues continue to persist, and yet, the Department of Agriculture somehow passed this facility during inspections.

The situation at Gittlers Aquarium and Aviary in Johnstown, PA is nothing short of a long-standing animal cruelty case that needs immediate attention. Despite numerous complaints and evidence of inhospitable conditions including lack of cleanliness, dead animals on display, and overpowering odors, no substantial actions have been taken by the local police or the Department of Agriculture.

Governor Shapiro, Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, Senator Langerholc, Representative Jim Rigby, and Representative Frank Burns, we are urging you to take a stand against this blatant mistreatment of animals. It is time to prioritize the welfare of these creatures and shut down this facility that continuously fails to meet even the most basic standards of humane treatment.

The atrocious conditions at Gittlers are not just an embarrassment; they are a violation of animal rights. Numerous animals are forced to live in overcrowded, dirty environments where neglect seems to be the norm rather than the exception. Each day this establishment remains operational is another day that countless animals suffer needlessly.

The power to change this lies with us. It lies in the voices of those who refuse to look away from this cruelty. It requires the combined efforts of concerned citizens, compassionate lawmakers, and dedicated public officials. Now more than ever, we need to come together to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Sign this petition to demand the immediate closure of Gittlers Aquarium and Aviary. Let’s ensure that the cries of these suffering animals are finally heard and that justice is served. Your support can lead to meaningful change. Please sign today and be a voice for the voiceless. Together, we can make a difference.
