Shri Pranab Mukherjee: Award Bharat Ratna to Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan

It is often said that what holds India back in terms of socio-economic development is lack of physical infrastructure. Nonetheless, some remarkable projects in this sphere have been executed in the history of independent India, ranging from the Delhi Metro to the Konkan railways. The one man behind these and other projects has been Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, the gentleman who retired recently on the most low-key note possible. How many Dr. Sreedharans will it take for the honourable Government of India to get its act together and at least give due recognition for a man who has made untold sacrifices for the nation and dedicated his entire life, even post-retirement, to the cause of development of critical and world-class infrastructure for Indians?! Or do we as a nation have such low self-awareness that we are not willing to execute a 4-second stroke of a signature to honour the true heroes amongst us?  Shri Pranab Mukherjee, you yourself being a man of such high honour and ability, can surely recognize that a nation that boasts about its superpower ambitions must first start the hard work at home, and in that light, must first pay its debt of due recognition to local heroes who have really made a significant impact for the masses. Not only will this award seed future Dr. Sreedharans, which our country badly needs, but it will also show the world what we as Indians are really capable of doing if we put our minds, hearts and souls together for India's common development. In dignifying the great work of this unassuming man, we will also reward the true humble character that makes such Indians the Jewels or Gems of our nation, or simply put, Bharat Ratnas.

Thank you for your time.
