On September 14, 2020, four upper caste men allegedly gang-raped a  Dalit woman in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, India. After fighting for her life for two weeks, she died in a Delhi hospital.

The incident took place on 14 September 2020, when the victim, a Dalit woman went to a farm to collect cattle fodder. The men dragged her away by dupatta around her neck injuring her spinal cord in the process. The violence left her paralyzed with a severe spinal cord injury. The perpetrators had tried to strangulate the girl as she resisted their rape attempt. Her cries were heard by her mother who came to the spot to find her lying down in the farm. She was at first taken to the  police station, where the police rejected her claims and, according to the family, humiliated them. The police registered a complaint only on 20 September. Police were able to record the victim's statement on 22 September.

The autopsy noted that the victim died by "injury to the cervical spine by blunt-force trauma," and the attempt to strangle her was not the cause of death. The final postmortem report also refers to "old tears in private parts, but no rape.

Now, have a look at this:

India has been characterised as one of the "countries with the lowest per capita rates of rape".According to the 2019 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 32033 rape cases were registered across the country, or an average of 88 cases daily, slightly lower than 2018 when 91 cases were registered daily.

THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED NOW!

Just think and see how many times we would have come across any women being harassed or molested in public transport or in any other public place and we acted like unnoticed.

Women's rights to need be improved, particularly economic independence. Many sexual assaults occur in homes, where the woman is dependent on her partner for financial sustenance.

Rape culture, victim blaming, and traumatic court processes need to go. There need to be women led initiatives to stop rape, along with male allies. Male judges, politicians cannot be the ones determining women's rights.

I believe we as a society has to change to curb any menace!
