CHANGE POLICY OF KILLING WILD ANIMALS
The Issue
In the recent Bihar massacre, 200 nilgai were culled. What was their fault? Was it their fault that farmers had taken away their habitat for farming? We agree that nilgai have caused extensive damage to farming fields but is this the only option? No, we have to think of better options for reducing their population. Sterilization of nilgai, creating better habitats (denser forests) for them or relocating them to forest sanctuaries are all solutions to this problem. What is the difference between this massacre and the massacre done by terrorist organizations? Both involve killing, both are cruel and brutal, and both involve killing another community (in this case nilgai). Why do we have to always think that animals are inferior to us?
Nilgai are endemic to the Indian subcontinent, especially India. This is their home and they are being killed brutally in their own home. They are considered to be protected under the Indian constitution too. Our country looks at them with pride. They have their own life and we don’t have a right to take it away. They have an equal right on this planet and on this land as we do.
We talk about equality but ignore equality of species. Do you think ignoring works? This is shameful on the central government’s part that they have allowed such a massacre. We think about the Jalianwallabagh incident and remember how our families were massacred. Don’t animals have families? Don’t they have feelings or emotions? If we think about it practically, then this is what it comes to. Why do we talk so much and not do a single thing? India is a democracy and a large proportion of Indians are animal lovers and activists. As a democracy, we have to listen and do what the people are saying, not what one community is saying.
Please think about these solutions and please please stop the massacres that have been allowed in this country including the nilgai (till November) in Bihar, monkeys in Himachal, and Peacocks in Goa. These animals are the pride of our country and many countries recognize us for having such a large biodiversity. These actions make us feel ashamed of our government and it is even difficult to call India a progressive nation when it is supporting such inhuman actions.
Animals are innocent and they have a right to live on this planet as much as we do.
