What may be one of the worlds most divisive songs, "Dixie", was the rallying cry of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The word Dixie goes far beyond a song title, the term dixie alone brings up a past that is too brutal to ignore. It is common knowledge that the word "dixie" has problematic origins related to slavery and plantation life. The confederate south was once known as Dixie. We are not a representation of the confederate south and we should not allow "Holiday in Dixie" to be recognized as a festival within our community. Although, we're taught to believe it's a celebration for the beginning of spring and the Louisiana purchase, I don't believe this festival is a representation of unity in our community. I am asking that the "Holiday in Dixie" festival be suspended indefinitely.
