M&G QLD extends its thanks to everyone who has signed our petition to save The University of Queensland’s Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs. With more than 2,600 signatures to date, it is heartening to see so many responses from across Australia and globally.
Campaign Update
The University of Queensland’s Academic Board met on 7 June 2024, where the discontinuation of the program was endorsed; however, M&G QLD has been encouraged to maintain a strong public facing campaign until The University of Queensland Senate meets on 25 June 2024. This is the next step in the discontinuation of the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs.
This is our last opportunity to stop the ‘teaching out’ of The University of Queensland’s Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs.
We urge The University of Queensland to reconsider its proposal and to explore alternate options to contemporise and better position its postgraduate Museum Studies programs ensuring their successful continuation now and into the future.
Once these programs are gone, a comparable tertiary qualification will be difficult to establish, forcing students to relocate interstate and impacting our Gallery, Library, Archives and Museum (GLAM) sector workforce and future leaders.
Please show your support by signing our petition, sharing it with colleagues, and writing directly to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Deborah Terry AC at vc@uq.edu.au and Professor Heather Zwicker, Executive Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at execdean@hass.uq.edu.au to express your concerns.
