The Issue
I have had the pleasure of hearing the stories and impact of the G-Force 60, the amazing group of elderly women who call the Generations Community Center a second home. My grandmother and my great aunt are two of the many cherished citizens who have found solace, companionship and vital stimulation at the Generations Community Center.
Program Director Ché Thompson-Orduña alongside Rita Dantzler, Charles Carter, Althea Jones, Alvertis Austin, and Charita Adams, have tirelessly extended love, care, and grace to Omaha's aging population via this community center. Unfortunately, the Center is now faced with closure on September 30th, a decision that would significantly affect the staff, and Omaha seniors who rely on it as a lifeline to combat isolation and depression.
The Generations Community Center has proven pivotal in providing our senior citizens with needed mental stimulation, physical exercises, and joy, ultimately contributing to holistic well being.
We respectfully call on the Heartland Family Services Board of Directors and Leadership team to prioritize keeping the Generations Community Center open up to one more year, or atleast until the seniors can find a new "home". We ask Heartland Family Services to recognize it as INTEGRAL to our North Omaha senior community. This is a plea not only for the wellness of our elderly citizens, but also for preserving an establishment that brings such richness to our community.
