Petition Letter:

Dear Vancouver City Councillors and School Trustees,

We would like to begin this petition by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nation.

37th Avenue, also known as Midtown/Ridgeway Greenway, is one of the city’s most popular and important Greenways for school communities using active modes of travel from Nanaimo Street to Pacific Spirit Park. Increasingly, many elementary and secondary classes rely on this route for classroom trips and field trips by bike. As its popularity grows, many Vancouver students, families and teachers are becoming acutely aware of the overwhelming number of fast-moving, dangerous cars using this route and the absence of safe infrastructure for children and parents walking, wheeling, and rolling. In fact, these safety concerns and lack of safe infrastructure are the biggest barrier to many more children independently using active modes of travel safely to access schools, parks and community centres. 37th Avenue has the potential to be a modern, safe Greenway for an enormous number of children, schools, and families. 

In order to make this route safe for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers we call on the City of Vancouver to implement safety measures along 37th, such as reducing and diverting traffic, adding modal filters to direct drivers to adjacent routes, and adding one-way blocks, and protected intersections and bike lanes.

Above all, we call on the City of Vancouver to make these essential changes in order to improve the safety and efficiency of the 37th Ave. route (Midtown/Ridgeway)  for all road users:

• Block traffic from turning onto 37th Ave(Midtown/Ridgeway) from arterials to prevent rat-running. This change alone will greatly reduce motor vehicle traffic volume.
• Prioritize the safety of school children, families, and other vulnerable road users using active transit modes above all others along 37th Ave. from Nanaimo to Pacific Spirit Park.
• Identify other Safe Routes to School to be prioritized for the above changes
