My elderly mother, who is on a fixed income, is conscientious about what she spends and shops for discounts for food, supplies, and clothing always has a hard time when the markdown is linked to a digital download. In most cases, the deal is significant and can mean a real difference in savings.

My sister, who lives in another state (as do I), typically will try to support my mother over the phone with her purchase (occasionally, that leads to frustration by both of them.)

I’m thinking of others who may not have the family support or the personal technology (or know-how) to save digitally, which is a significant problem for those on fixed incomes looking for ways to cut costs.

I appreciate what retailers are doing but perhaps inadvertently, the digital coupon seems to serve as a regressive tax for our low tech or no tech community members and disproportionately affects our senior citizens.

My mom, and I know others who are perfectly happy to subscribe to their local papers for the Sunday ads and cut coupons but are generally disappointed that the real savings involve the use of technology which is beyond the grasp of many.
