Bring back the intro song for the final season of Grey’s Anatomy

The Issue

Creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes has literally fought over the pilot’s music for Grey’s Anatomy. The piece “Cosy in the Rocket” by Psapp used to play while imagery of steamy moments in a hospital flashed across the screen. Rhimes took great care in choosing the music, but after the early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, the theme song was dropped and switched to a brief title flash that hurts your eyes when watching the show in the evening / late at night.

TV historian Tim Brooks says: “Producers feel, rightly or wrongly, that that interruption, if you will, is going to lose viewers.” He feels those theme songs are a thing of the past, and we won’t see network television bringing them back anytime soon. But why can’t Grey’s Anatomy be an exception?

Many fans pointed out that they loved it when they brought the theme song back for the 300th episode. It is also loved because it brings back the nostalgia of the early seasons. “The intro was a really beautifully filmed piece of the show,” one fan added. “It would be cool if they used the same song and aesthetic but made a new one for the current cast!”

Other people argue that it gets boring after a while and that bringing the song back results in less air time. But the intro used to be 26 seconds long, which is not a lot compared to a 45-50 minute episode. Seeing it once a week  for barely half a minute can’t get too boring. Even if they remade it, they could keep it almost as short; almost, because the amount of main characters has grown. This applies if one watches weekly when the episodes air for the first time. If you binge-watch, the intro can get annoying, but luckily many streaming platforms have the options to skip the intro / summary.

So whoever is in charge of this, please bring back the Grey’s Anatomy intro of “Cosy in the Rocket”, as many fans would really appreciate to hear this master piece again at the beginning of the episodes of their favourite show. That “interruption” was iconic and beautifully filmed and we want it back! You will not lose (many) viewers and you would make so many viewers happy, if you would bring the intro back.
