The Issue

After many visits to A&E with our son who has Autism, we have found understanding of the condition to be limited and care and facilities to be insufficient. He always has to wait for hours in busy waiting rooms, becomes very distressed and is frequently met with doctors or other health professionals who take no account of or don't know how to deal with his needs. Some are rude and others dismissive. We would like them to show understanding and patience. We would like to see better Autism Awareness training for all health care staff in hospitals and in particular in A&E departments. People who care for our most vulnerable children need to be better equipped to help them, especially in stressful and upsetting emergency situations. I know there are a vast number of wonderful people who work so hard to keep the NHS running, despite cut backs and stretched services. I greatly appreciate this. I merely wish better training and improved facilities to make visits less stressful for people with additional needs and their families. This improvement to care should include training, better awareness, improved waiting facilities and a flag on records to highlight Autism and other specific needs from the outset. This could help reduce stress for patients and families, improve examinations for doctors and patients, prevent unnecessary repetition of information and help in treatment of vulnerable patients when a family member or carer is not present. I would like the NHS to improve training and record keeping, as well as provide more appropriate waiting facilities for patients with special needs. In particular, a flag should be put on records which is immediately noticeable to anyone dealing with their care.
