Get Gritters Out Earlier!

Get Gritters Out Earlier!

The Issue

As one of the many commuters of Shetland Isles roads I am writing to request the Council to provide a better service/propose a solution to the ever running argument relating to treacherous road conditions during the winter months.  Shetland experiences a 2/3 month extreme weather front at the beginning of every year, in the darkest period, during the lowest temperatures.  The standard of service allowable by the SIC is not acceptable.  Shetland has ever growing industries and working hours vary within each and every one of them.  The standard "gritting times" does not apply any longer.  There have already been enough crashes during this year's wintery period.  The council seem to get away with ignoring this discussion ever year as it is such a short period of time, and therefore it is forgotten about when the weather improves.  It is time to make a stand and make them take action, if not for this year.. perhaps for the next.   Shetland Islands roads are our only transport link - we understand that there may be helicopters and lifeboats available in the event of an emergency, but can someone inform us about the costs involved in deploying same compared to diligently maintaining the roads.  To the Shetland Islands Council - please provide us with a solution to a problem that affects so many members of your community, and stop the stress imposed on so many by commuting on unsatisfactorily treated roads.  So please sign this petition and get the Shetland Island Council to make our roads safe!
