Ask the New Mexico House of Representatives Safety and Civil Affairs Committee to Stand with Immigrant Students and Our Families, All New Mexicans Deserve Driver Licenses

Ask the New Mexico House of Representatives Safety and Civil Affairs Committee to Stand with Immigrant Students and Our Families, All New Mexicans Deserve Driver Licenses

The Issue

The New Mexico House of Representatives Safety and Civil Affairs Committee will be considering HB32 and HB79 to repeal licenses from undocumented immigrants in our state.

The UNM Dream Team wants to urge the Representatives on the committee to stand with immigrant students and families. Keeping all drivers in New Mexico licensed, with all drivers having the same license, keeps all of us safe and allows students to drive to school and parents to drive their children to school. Including New Mexico, ten states as well as DC and Puerto Rico give licenses to undocumented immigrants.

Immigrants in New Mexico pay local, state and federal taxes. Immigrants in New Mexico create jobs for other New Mexicans. Immigrant communities also lower crime rates in the communities they live.

With licenses, immigrant students can drive to school and immigrant parents can drive to work or take their children to daycare and school. The UNM Dream Team doesn't want the state of New Mexico to further criminalize immigrants by making it unsafe for everyone and have unlicensed and uninsured drivers in New Mexico. Without a license, like all other drivers in the state, immigrants without any criminal background become targets for detention and deportation. We want all New Mexicans to drive safely with a license and also have a license that isn't different from other drivers.

Help the UNM Dream Team urge the New Mexico House of Representatives Safety and Civil Affairs Committee to keep licenses for all New Mexicans.
