For more than thirty (30) years, Warren G. Crutchfield (1936-2019) has served Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), various private institutions, Olney-Ashton-Sandy Spring, and Sherwood High School (SHS) communities with both dignity and distinction. He was first and foremost an educator— impacting countless students, families and friends with his knowledge, skills and abilities and philosophical leanings on such matters as the impact of teamwork, hard work, sport and play in the ‘game’ called life.  Yet, most may remember him as an ardent coach, mentor, colleague, friend, athlete and community activist.  Mr. Crutchfield coached basketball, cross country, and track & field at SHS and, while doing so, exemplified the epitome of one who was both inspirational and aspirational. Simply put, Crutch, as he was affectionately called, was a great man who knew how to get the best out of others, while making them feel good about themselves and wanting to be better humans. This quality, and one of his finest, is that of a true leader.  Too numerous to count, he undoubtedly came in contact with a myriad of students, colleagues, families and friends teaching each with the consideration, care and compassion they deserved. This petition seeks community feedback for and support of the honor of naming the SHS gymnasium after Mr. Warren Gordon Crutchfield, teacher, coach, mentor, activist, leader and friend.
