We, the undersigned, call upon the Coconino County Sheriff to end his policy of turning people over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

By honoring ICE requests, which are misleadingly called “warrants,” the sheriff is disrupting the lives of immigrant families, leaving them feeling less safe to report crimes or cooperate in crime investigations. And that makes our whole community less safe. 

We therefore call upon Sheriff Driscoll to:

• end his policy of holding people on the basis of ICE detainers and ICE administrative warrants, which are not signed by a judge and result in unconstitutionally holding immigrants after they should  be released
• revise jail policy so staff do not communicate with ICE about the anticipated release time of inmates

It is time for the sheriff to stop getting involved in civil immigration matters and to instead protect the public by focusing on criminal cases. Because that’s what his office is supposed to do.
