#SheRidesSafe: Protect Women & Children with Better Safety Measures and Technology in NYC
The Issue
Women and children deserve to travel without fear. We are calling for dedicated safety improvements on our NYC subway system — including women-and-children-only train cars and better security infrastructure.
Every day, countless women and young girls rely on our subway system. They should feel supported by it — not scared of it. Yet harassment, stalking, and assault have become disturbingly common experiences for women ages 18–34 who ride public transit. This is unacceptable.
We are demanding meaningful improvements that prioritize safety, choice, and accessibility for all women and children.
We are calling for the following actions across the subway system:
- Women-and-Children-Only Train Cars during peak hours for safer commute options
- Increased Security Personnel in stations and onboard during all high-risk times
- Enhanced Lighting and Camera Coverage where visibility is poor or outdated
- Emergency Call Buttons & Intercoms in Every Car so help is always reachable
- Clear, Trauma-Informed Reporting Systems that empower victims to seek justice
- Public Education Campaigns reinforcing that harassment and violence will not be tolerated
Technology should be actively protecting riders — not lagging behind while safety issues get worse. Other major cities around the world have adopted protective transport solutions with strong results. There is no excuse for inaction when evidence-supported solutions exist.
No woman or child should fear getting home. No one should have to compromise personal safety just to access public transit. We deserve a subway system that protects us. We deserve to ride without fear.
Sign today and send a clear message: Women’s safety has to come first.
