Shenna Bellows Must Resign as Maine’s Secretary of State

The Issue

As Mainers, we expect public officials to uphold the law, safeguard public safety, and rise above partisan agendas. But Shenna Bellows, Maine’s Secretary of State, has repeatedly shown that she puts politics before public service—and now it's costing lives.

Bellows’ refusal to share voter information with the Trump administration was just the start. Her decision to politicize her office by pursuing efforts to remove Donald Trump from the ballot was a misuse of power. But now, things have gone too far.

After a tragic crash in Lewiston where a pedestrian was killed by a driver later detained by ICE, many are asking: how did someone with questionable immigration status end up legally licensed to drive in Maine? The same question arises after a second fatal crash the very next day. Bellows oversees the Bureau of Motor Vehicles—yet her office has declined to cooperate with routine federal data requests. Why?

Maine doesn’t allow undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses, but trust in our systems depends on accountability. If Bellows’ office isn’t vetting applicants properly or is using her authority to push political narratives instead of enforce the law, she’s unfit to serve.

She is now campaigning for governor while still holding her powerful office—a clear conflict of interest. If Bellows can't separate her political ambition from her official responsibilities, it’s time for her to step aside.

We call on Shenna Bellows to resign immediately. The people of Maine deserve a Secretary of State who puts safety, transparency, and the rule of law first.
