Shenendehowa Parents Call for Change in School Photography
The Issue
As parents in the Shenendehowa community, our top priority has always been the safety, well-being, and overall experience of our children. Every decision made within our schools should reflect that commitment and uphold the trust families place in the district each day. With recent public concerns and ongoing discussions surrounding large national corporations such as Lifetouch, many parents have begun to feel uneasy and are asking important questions about who we allow to work directly with our students. We believe this is an appropriate and responsible time to pause, reflect, and reevaluate those choices.
Rather than continuing with a large, national company that has raised concerns for families, we believe Shenendehowa should follow the example of nearby school districts that have successfully transitioned to using local photographers. These districts have demonstrated that it is possible to maintain high-quality school photos while also prioritizing transparency, accountability, and community trust. Local businesses are more accessible, easier to vet, and more directly accountable to the families they serve.
Choosing a local photographer would not only provide greater peace of mind for parents but would also strengthen our connection as a community. It keeps our money within the local economy, supports small businesses, and fosters relationships with professionals who have a genuine stake in our schools and our children. School photos are meaningful keepsakes that capture important milestones in our children’s lives, and families deserve confidence in the individuals entrusted with that responsibility.
As parents, it is our responsibility to speak up when concerns arise, advocate for our children, and encourage decisions that reflect our shared values. We believe prioritizing safety, accountability, transparency, and community support aligns with those values and serves the best interests of our students. By reconsidering the use of national corporations and exploring local alternatives, Shenendehowa has the opportunity to reinforce trust, strengthen community ties, and make choices that truly put our children first.
