Shenandoah County recently decided to "retire" the names of Stonewall Jackson High School, Ashby-Lee Elementary School, and the mascot , the "Rebel", of North Fork Middle School. This was done on the basis of another petition that states:

"As a school system that claims to be inclusive and non discriminatory towards all races, it is counterproductive to have schools named after racist leaders...... places African American children in a position of inferiority. If the school system is truly inclusive and non discriminatory, the names should be changed immediately to rid the racist narrative and values attached to them"

During all comment sessions AFTER the decision was made there were many references to slavery and owning another human. We ALL AGREE this practice was atrocious. And so, since Muhlenberg was a slave owner (and possibly trader) his name should be "retired" as well.

With that being said, the undersigned believe that you must also include Peter Muhlenberg to the list of 'banned' names as he was the owner of other human beings.
