Why vote no to Proposition 3 in November on Shelter Island?
Supervisor Gerry Siller wants to build 30-40 new affordable housing units. Where? He's not sure. Who will live there? He's not sure. Will EMT and SIFD members be guaranteed a unit? Absolutely not if there is federal funding - they will be available to anyone - not just Shelter Islanders - anyone who meets the income requirements will be eligible - from anywhere.
Will these units affect the island's fragile, already overextended aquifer? Absolutely - 40 units means 80 brand new bathrooms (toilets, baths, showers, cesspools).
Doesn't Shelter Island already have an affordable housing project on Bowditch Road across the street from the town dump and contaminated landfill? Yes, and it's a dismal failure - only the original families benefit, and the homes sell at market rate, meaning - over time the project disappears.
What will these 30-40 units look like? The Town Board is not sure. How much will these units cost? No one has an answer. One thing is for darn sure - your hard earned tax dollars will pay for this unnecessary, frivolous disaster for ETERNITY! The town intends to float a bond(s), establish a housing authority, hire a large staff to manage the administration, hire a staff to manage the properties, insurance, water/water testing, heat, plumbing/cooling, landscaping, repairs, legal, ....each staff member hired by the town will require a salary, health insurance, a pension...

Spread the word - Proposition 3 is an epic disaster that exposes a town board absolutely committed to affordable housing on Shelter Island with absolutely no reasonable and transparent plan and absolutely no common sense or fiscal responsibility. Affordable housing and the protection of your property rights demands intelligent planning - and Prop 3 is an epic fail. Protect yourself and protect your property rights - VOTE NO!
