Petition to the Suffolk County Legislature: Request for Action to Support Homeless Individuals with Pets

Date: 1/13/2025

To the Honorable Members of the Suffolk County Legislature,

We, the undersigned residents of Suffolk County, New York, respectfully submit this petition to urge you to take immediate action to support homeless individuals in our community who have pets. As you may be aware, the issue of homelessness is a pressing concern, and the barriers faced by those with pets exacerbate this crisis.

Concerns:

1. Barriers to Shelter Access: Existing shelters in our county often fail to accommodate individuals with pets, leaving many without safe options for shelter. This poses a significant risk to the well-being of both the individuals and their pets.

2. Reasonable Accommodations: While the Fair Housing Act provides a framework for individuals to seek accommodations for their pets, many requests are denied by the Department of Social Services despite valid claims. This highlights the need for better communication and policy enforcement to support those in need.

3. Human-Animal Bond: Studies show that the bond between humans and their pets can provide essential emotional support, especially during challenging times. Displacing this bond increases stress and potentially worsens the mental health of those facing homelessness.

Request for Action:

We respectfully request that the Suffolk County Legislature:

1. Develop and Implement Policies: Create policies that ensure shelters accommodate individuals with pets, recognizing the importance of the human-animal bond.

2. Enhance Training for Social Services: Provide training for Department of Social Services staff on handling requests for reasonable accommodations related to pets to minimize denials and properly assess each case.

3. Increase Funding: Allocate necessary resources to shelters and programs aimed at helping homeless individuals keep their pets during their time of crisis, including temporary housing solutions.

4. Collaborate with Local Organizations: Partner with local animal rescue and welfare organizations to create initiatives aimed at facilitating access to temporary housing options for homeless individuals with pets.

We believe that these actions will not only address the urgent needs of our neighbors experiencing homelessness but also promote a more inclusive and compassionate community.

We, the undersigned, hereby support this petition and call on the Suffolk County Legislature to take immediate action.
