Shipping containers used as single family living in designated zoning areas. (Memphis, TN)

The Issue

The existing Shelby County ordinance or building code does not allow for the use of shipping containers as a residential structural or home without going through the expensive and timely Office of Planning and Development variance process. I would like to have a new or amended ordinance to allow shipping containers in designated single family zoning areas excluding historical districts and communities with covenants or HOA's.

I would like for the local politicians on the Memphis and Shelby County Commissions to create a process to allow for the construction of container homes. This process would include using a licensed engineer to certify the structural integrity and the building process would be the same as a regular home with plumbing, mechanical, and electrical permits and inspections.

With the cost of construction increasing for various reasons and the need for affordable homes, I believe shipping container homes are a viable option for some. Shipping containers can be built on site or modular at an off site location for less than traditional construction. Container homes may not be for everyone but there are many who could benefit in Memphis.
