The Issue

On the 15th of June 2021 the @HelpSheffield Twitter account ran a Twitter survey asking the following question and received the following replies from 458 votes.

Would you be ok if @SCSupertram allowed dogs and bikes on?

Dogs Yes 16%

Bikes Yes 13%

Dogs and Bikes Yes 60%

Neither 11%

Whilst this is not a scientifically rigorous survey (In part due to the limitations of Twitter surveys) it is a decent indication that there is a strong bias towards allowing dogs onto the Stagecoach service in Sheffield (Bike petition to follow separately).

Stagecoach currently allows small dogs in a suitable container and assistance dogs onboard. It is not always practical to find and carry a suitable container so we would ask that this rule be changed to allow dogs of all sizes on a lead be allowed as well.

Stagecoach have cited health and safety reasons for their current rules but dogs are allowed on buses and trains and various tram systems throughout the world, to this end we would suggest a trial run during off peak times if only to test the feasibility of allowing dogs long term.

In a time of making Sheffield an active travel city this would be a huge leap towards that for many people. Many people will use their cars as an alternative to tram transport as they are not allowed on with their animals.

People could additionally help with this petition by bringing it to the attention of the city region mayor Dan Jarvis and the Active Travel Manager Dame Sarah Storey.
