More free community space in Sheffield

The Issue

We want more free to use community space in Sheffield, that is open for longer hours.

Why?

  • As a community group ourselves we have found it difficult to find accessible space, where we did not have to pay or consume to be there. It means communities and lesser heard voices can sustainably meet, support each other, grow closer and make change.
  • Social Isolation - Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health: lacking social connections is a comparable risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is worse for us than well-known risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity.
  • Meanwhile use is about giving the community itself space to experiment across a wide range of activities, from arts and cultural initiatives to providing additional health and educational services, to fostering new local businesses. Many of those experiments will fail. However, experimentation and diversity lie at the heart of the complex creative chaos that will drive value in the 21st century.

Who are we asking for space?

Well, anyone who believes in community and wants to create space for groups in their community but mostly, the government, local authorities, commercial landlords and business owners.
