In 2010 Metroland, The Capital Region's Alternative Newsweekly reviewed 9 Capital Region theater productions. In 2011, they reviewed 15. So far this year they have reviewed 2.
What have they missed so far this year? "Shrek" at Proctors, "Next Fall" and "Lend Me a Tenor" at Curtain Call, "Company" at Class Act, "The Ives Have It" at Schenectady Civic, "Baby" at Schenectady Light Opera, "The Last Five Years" at Caffe Lena, "The Pirates of Penzance" at Cohoes Music Hall, "Rumors" at Albany Civic, "And Then There Were None at Home Made and "Much Ado..." at Theatre Institute at Sage.
None of these were reviewed. Some were given what Shawn Stone, Arts Editor calls a preview. 2 or 3 paragraphs, no interviews, sometimes a picture, really a long blurb.
Professional, community, school or 99% of the time a combinations of all three, the theater work is here, growing and praised by the Troy Record, the Daily Gazette and the Times-Union.
So, why do we need Metroland's coverage? Because they are The Capital Region's Alternative Newsweekly, modelled after the Village Voice where theater is so vital the Obies were founded less than a year after the Voice went to press. Because we need their dissenting voice, their faux superior disdain, their attention, their conversion, their respect. Because they need to do their job to serve the community, their advertisers, their readers and their own self-respect. Because in an increasingly more challenging environment for the arts we cannot let a single resource go wasted, as damaged and recalcitrant as it may be.
Because an alternative newsweekly covers theater and we need the Capital Region's, Metroland to cover Capital Region theater.
