Closing Statement
While we did not achieve the outcome we hoped for, this campaign was never solely about a building. It was about the people, the relationships, and the belief that every young person deserves access to opportunity, mentorship, and community.
Today, Shaw Community Center is no longer serving the community in the way that inspired this movement. That is a difficult reality to accept. Even so, the impact of our work did not end. It continues to live on through the young people whose lives were shaped, encouraged, and inspired by the countless staff, mentors, volunteers, and supporters who poured themselves into this community.
To everyone who signed, shared, donated, and stood with us, thank you. Your support demonstrated that this community cares deeply about its youth and believes they deserve spaces where they can learn, grow, and thrive.
As a final act of this campaign, all funds raised through this petition will be divided equally among three Shaw youth who are beginning their college journeys this fall. While we could not preserve the institution, we can invest directly in the future it helped create.
This is not the ending we wanted, but it is a reminder that the true legacy of Shaw Community Center has never been the building itself. Its legacy is the young people who will carry its values forward into their communities, campuses, careers, and lives.
Thank you for standing with us.
