Demand Guilford County Schools to terminate the new mandatory schedule!

The Issue

With the updated school schedule by Guilford County Schools many students, parents, and faculty members are displeased.  The new schedule extends the amount of live instruction time from 3 hours and 10 minutes to 4 hours and 30 minutes.  However the new schedule has so many breaks that it really extends live instruction time to 7 hours and 25 minutes.  That is not even including the immeasurable amount of homework that students are required to do after class.  Homework times can vary from 30 minutes to 4 hours (mainly done on the computer). This is an unbearable amount of time for students and teachers to sit in front of their computer screens for live instruction and homework.  Extended screen time has been shown to have many negative effects on people's health and well-being.   According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, people who experience 5-7 hours of screen time a day have been known to get a poor night's sleep, be less attentive during the day, experience mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and may become obese.  The CDC states that obesity and depression can lead to more serious issues such as diabetes, disease, stroke and suicide which are all leading causes of death in America.  If Guilford County Schools and Superintendent Sharon Contreras care about the students health and want them to "Soar to greatness" as much as they claim they do, then they will listen to the students, faculty, and parents voices and change the new schedule!
