Petition to use known science and stop the elk hunt, do not slaughter Idaho’s natural predators to boost elk hunting

February 28, 2014 Idaho Fish and Game news release states officially the intent to kill as many natural predators, to include wolves, bears, and mountain lions, as necessary to boost elk numbers for the intent of hunting.   They have just completed an aerial hunt of 23 wolves in the Lolo area, following the killing of two wolf packs in the Frank Church Wilderness.  Shortly after the Frank Church killing, ranchers demanded the killing of excess elk in the areas east of Boise.

Background:  The Lolo Valley area of Idaho, until the 1980’s was a popular attraction for elk hunters and brought revenue in to the area.  Due to habitat changes related to forest fires in the area, followed by harsh winters, the elk population dwindled, and has not recovered since.

The drop in elk numbers are related to a number of factors unrelated to wolf recovery, and it occurred prior to wolf recovery.  The purpose of this desired boost in elk numbers is for hunting them for tourism and local recreational hunts, it is not in the best interest of the health of elk herds.  Our science now documents well the necessity of a balanced ecosystem which includes healthy natural predators.  This promotes healthy herds of all species, decreases incidence of disease, and promotes ideal habitats.  This causes a rebound in the health of all animals, plants and insects of the ecosystem.

We request that the State of Idaho implement policy to bring back a healthy ecosystem by stopping the elk hunt this season to allow them to recover naturally.  By killing wolves and allowing the hunt of elk, the surviving elk will have higher incidence of disease, and habitat cannot rebound.
