Rotherham Truth Campaign
13 dic 2017
The question begins at 09.34
Does the Leader of the Council agree that online communications with members of the public about what resources have been specifically allocated to help victims and survivors of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) have been dire and will he ensure that all relevant information is published online, say within two weeks?
10.21 Mayor – Councillor Read can I invite you to respond to Mr Harron please.
Councillor Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council:
You can Madam Mayor. Thank you Mr Harron. I think members are aware of your ongoing commitment to championing this issue.
I am not sure I agree that the information available on the Council’s website is dire. There certainly is a page which includes information about the way we are dealing with Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham now which includes a video where you can see me talking about it and a number of other people … and there is information on there with contact details for the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub for Rotherham Abuse Counselling Service, for Grow, Barnardo’s and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre. All of which I would hope would be useful information for people seeking support or seeking information about activity in the Borough now. I am sort of conscious that that doesn’t specifically include financial resources allocated by the Council. I don’t know if that was your intention in asking the question. If there are specific details that you think we should add to that, then I am happy to take a representation on that. I have asked the Communications Team to ensure that that page is easily visible and accessible from the Home page on the Council’s website.
11.38 Mayor – Mr Harron would you like to ask a supplementary?
I put this question in because of the statement that you made in public some weeks ago about the bid and the failure of the bid. For people like me that are very actively campaigning and have been campaigning for three years plus, it’s very important that we – I did watch the video – that we have the information that we need to help you get more resources. We need to have a better understanding. You know I campaign actively across a range of issues.
What might help is the following.
Three years ago, on 16th December, I met with Paul Lakin, the former Leader. And I offered then to give two days of my voluntary activity then for three months to help Rotherham improve its communications. On 16th December. Ian Thomas was in the meeting and he said – he had just been appointed – he said there are thousands who want to help like that. If you were to ask me to help improve communications I would be minded to respond to that. But my question is – will you please ask Ian Thomas, the director of Children’s Services to write a report showing how he has utilised the thousands of people and the time that they offered to him in his first few weeks in Rotherham?
Thank you
13.14 Mayor – Councillor Read
Mr Harron I am happy to talk to Mr Thomas about the information we make available on the Council’s website about what the Council has done in response to child sexual exploitation. I think we have a strong story to tell. Whether that would involve going into the use of volunteers and the many people who have been in touch with him or other parts of the Council I am not entirely sure that would be appropriate. But I will reflect on that in the weeks to come.
13.42 Mayor – Thank you Mr Harron
