Stop pelvic exams and Rectal exams on unconscious people under anesthesia without consent

The Issue

A human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his body.” Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo, Schloendorff v Society of New York Hospital, (1914)    I have recently become aware of the fact that in 44 states it is still legal for pelvic and rectal exams to be given to patients under anesthesia without their consent or knowledge .Pelvic exams or rectal exams in anesthetized men or woman solely for training purposes only should be  performed only with her or his specific informed consent obtained before her surgery.” State laws have been enacted (in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Oregon, and Virginia) that define unauthorized pelvic examinations as a misdemeanor that could be grounds for loss of medical licensure. Doing so without consent is a violation of human rights and is a unethical practice which should end now. I believe the fact this still happens is deeply troubling and concerning to many women and men alike. I understand that medical students need to learn but at no time should it be done without written consent from a patient. I have also read the moral dilemma this places on medical students as well knowing that consent was not given and that patients are unaware of this practice .This should not be happening in our medical field. I believe this breaks the doctor patient trust and takes away from the right to our own bodies.  We need bills passed with consequences when a patient is violated.  Please sign this petition  now and help end this practice.
