On the morning of March 4, 2016, my beautiful, loving son, Courtney Copeland, was fatally shot in the back on his way to a friend’s house. He collapsed in front of a police car near the 25th District police station in Chicago’s Northwest side, and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It has been months since my son’s life was viciously taken, and the killer is still unknown. Despite my outreach, the police have offered no update or information to me or my family. I need more answers.
We are asking the Chicago Police Department to allow our family access to all the videos and recordings associated with my son’s murder. We don’t want to have to wait years or go to court, as some families have, to get all the information that could help us find the justice Courtney deserves.
I need to know what happened to my son. I have been nothing but cooperative with the police. I have organized meetings with members of the Chicago community to unite and collect information about who committed this crime, but when I ask the police for a case update, all they tell me is “this is an ongoing investigation.” Courtney and our family deserve justice and more information.
Courtney was an outgoing and caring 22-year-old who worked hard for everything he had. I am deeply touched by the outpouring of love for him, as people continue to post daily on his Facebook page. It is clear he left a huge impression on our community. I miss him every single day, and am frustrated by the lack of updated information I have about his death and the investigation.
Please join me in asking the Chicago Police Department to grant my family access to all police POD and surveillance video, police dash cameras, and 911 recordings pertaining to the murder of my son, Courtney Copeland.
