I went to visit the "Toronto Zoo" elephants who are now residing in sunny California at PAWS (Performing Animals Welfare Society); a 2,300 acre sanctuary where they will live out their remaining days. They are entirely different elephants than when they were confined to the Toronto Zoo and I would urge you to extend the same dignity to Lucy, before it's too late. I'd like to request that the Government of Alberta take action to enforce the Alberta Zoo Standards to stop the suffering of Lucy, the lone Asian elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo (EVZ). Further, I would ask that you facilitate an independent expert veterinary assessment of Lucy to ascertain the status of her health, and if feasible, support her transfer to more suitable accommodation. IF you could see the facility at PAWS, there would be no question that it would be a MUCH improved environment for Lucy, and she could retire in warmth, peace and quiet.  Ed Stewart, Founder of PAWS, and his staff spend 24-hours a day caring for the elephants; placing their welfare ahead of any profits; something the Edmonton Zoo is not doing.  Please take some action.
