“NO PORT IN HICKS BAY”
Because of attending a Hui held at Awatere Marae on Monday 23rd April, which was attended by the Honorable Shane Jones and Meka Whaitiri, I came home feeling worried that the Government could possibly entertain Ngati Porou Forestry’s proposal of transporting logs from a Port in Hicks Bay? This was clearly demonstrated when the NP Forestry General Manager delivered his presentation with confidence that they want a “Hicks Bay Port”.
However, what was more concerning, it appeared that the “Hicks Bay Port” proposal presented by NP Forestry, had the presence and support of the TRONPnui without HAPU Consultation or Agreement?
If Government decides to support a Port in Hicks Bay, which is pretty much driven by our own, then potentially we have a “Serious” battle on our hands.
Both Ani and I felt it necessary and seized the opportunity to speak to Minister Shane Jones & Minister Meka Whaitiri on behalf of our Whanau, Hapu and Community, clearly stating “WE DO NOT WANT A PORT IN HICKS BAY”
The IMPACT of a logging operation of that nature driving through our small township 24/7, will destroy our Community, our Spirit and turn Hicks Bay into an INDUSTRIAL WASTE LAND!
We shouldn’t be made to feel responsible and sacrifice our Kapata Kai, Wahi Tapu, and compromise our Pristine Coastal Environment to resolve a Transporting logs and Road issue?
It’s time Whanau, make some noise, plan and prepare. We will not be bull dozed or made to feel our voice doesn’t matter!
