Petition Closed

This petition has been created in protest against the misrepresentation and exhibition of moral policing in a show called 'Thori si bewafai' on A-Plus, which airs Mondays at 11 pm, and is produced by Umer Gulzari & hosted by Shamoon Abbasi. The show's synopsis on A-plus' website claims to use hidden cameras to intrude into real people's personal lives and expose their alleged infidelities. If the programme is actually intruding on to real people’s personal lives, then it is an illegal violation of individual privacy.

The host of the show Shamoon Abbas recently announced on his facebook page, that 'Thori si bewafai' is actually reenactments and involves paid actors. If in fact, Shamoon Abbassi's statements are true, then the synopsis on your website and the programme itself, is a clear misrepresentation of the real nature of the show.

But even if the programme is based on reenactments, the content of the show is dangerous; it encourages vigilantism and can lead to hate crimes.

A-plus has branded itself as a 'socially responsible entertainment channel' but 'Thori Si Baywafi' is anything but responsible.

This kind of programming has nothing constructive or productive to offer and is copying the worst type of television genre. Reality shows draw huge viewerships around the world, but in a society as intolerant, divided and violent as Pakistan, it is likely to create many instances of
provocation, persecution, coercion and potential grievous harm to innocent
people. Therefore by telecasting such programs, the channel is acting as a potential provoker, aider and abettor to incitement to violence and criminal bodily harm.

As viewers and citizens of Pakistan, we not only protest the glorification of such moral policing, but also point out that this kind of programming is likely to also lead to legal action for violation of dignity of man under the Article 14 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which legal action we as signatories will support, propagate and promote.

I just signed the following petition addressed to: PEMERA and A-plusTV.

We are writing to register our protest against the misrepresentation and exhibition of moral policing in a show called 'Thori si bewafai' on A-Plus, which airs Mondays at 11 pm, and is produced by Umer Gulzari & hosted by Shamoon Abbasi. The show's synopsis on A-plus' website (link 1 below) claims to use hidden cameras to intrude into real people's personal lives and expose their alleged infidelities. If the programme is actually intruding on to real people’s personal lives, then it is an illegal violation of individual privacy.

The host of the show Shamoon Abbas recently announced on his facebook page (link 2 below) that 'Thori si bewafai' is actually reenactments and involves paid actors.

We demand an immediate end to programming that:
1. claims to intrude into people's personal lives
2. claims to use personal complaints against private individuals to act like moral
police
3. claims to uses hidden cameras to expose people's personal lives and private
activities
4. misrepresents the true nature of its programming i.e. portrays fictions as reality.
4. encourages vigilantism and hate crimes
