Shame Councillor Adrian McRae for supporting Putin and his sham elections
The issue
After travelling to Russia on the invitation of the Russian Government to observe the predetermined presidential ‘election’ held 15-17 March 2024, Cr McRae has congratulated the tyrant Vladimir Putin on his ‘comprehensive victory’, lauded the ‘transparency’ of the Russian electoral process, and praised Russia’s ‘democracy’.
Putin’s Russia is no democracy. It is a brutal, authoritarian regime, which allows for no independent civic society, media or elections. In its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces are accused of committing over 122,000 war crimes, including murder, summary executions, torture, rape and the abduction of over 19,000 Ukrainian children.
Together with many other world leaders, Australia’s Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong has condemned the stage-managed election result, describing it as an “insult to democracy”.
Australia is an inclusive, multicultural, democratic nation. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our civic life. Cr McRae has benefited directly from those processes, but seems not to grasp that the same cannot be said of Russia. That is indefensible for someone who is now an elected representative.
Ex-Port Hedland shire president Arnold Carter says Cr McRae should step down over his comments. Premier for Western Australia Roger Cook has urged the Town of Port Hedland to counsel Cr McRae.
Join us and sign the petition to:
- Call for Cr Adrian McRae to resign. His actions and comments supporting a brutal, undemocratic regime have raised serious concerns regarding public trust and confidence in his ability to act with integrity, as required by the Town of Port Hedland Code of Conduct.
- Urge the Town of Port Hedland Council to denounce Cr McRae’s statements and actions, which have seriously compromised the reputation of the Council.
