The Issue

The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Superfund Site was used by the Navy for military operations for decades, contaminating the area with radioactive waste that continues to harm the environment and community health.

The Navy is responsible for the cleanup and plans on leaving dangerous amounts of contamination capped at the site—which will spread further into surrounding neighborhoods and the San Francisco Bay as rising sea levels push toxic groundwater to the surface.

This pollution poses a serious threat to the health of our Bay and the health of Bayview residents, who already face disproportionately high rates of cancer and respiratory illnesses.

The Navy aims to transfer the former Shipyard to the City of San Francisco for redevelopment. However, Mayor Daniel Lurie has the authority to reject the transfer until the Navy fully remediates the site.

We demand that the Mayor does NOT accept land with buried contamination. Mayor Lurie and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors MUST require a 100% cleanup of ALL radioactive waste at the Hunters Point Shipyard with complete re-testing and community oversight.

The time to end the toxic legacy of the Hunters Point Shipyard is now. We stand with the Bayview Hunters Point community and we need our Mayor to stand with us!
