The Issue

As an advocate for the safety and wellbeing of students and staff, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by overcrowded workshop environments in schools and colleges across Wales. The surge in class sizes, particularly in workshop settings, has reached alarming levels, jeopardizing both safety and quality of education.

In these hands-on learning environments, the stakes are significantly higher. Workshop classes require close supervision to ensure that students can engage safely with potentially hazardous tools and machinery. However, when classes exceed 20 pupils per teacher or lecturer, it becomes extraordinarily difficult to maintain a safe and effective learning atmosphere.

According to recent educational studies, smaller class sizes enable more personalized instruction, enhance student performance, and reduce teacher burnout. Moreover, experts in educational safety stress that intense supervision in workshop settings is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Currently, there is no legislation in Wales enforcing a maximum class size in such settings, leaving our students vulnerable to increased risk of injuries and accidents. By implementing a legal cap of no more than 20 pupils per teacher or lecturer in workshops, we can provide a safer, more conducive learning environment that promotes both effective education and the physical safety of our students. While 20 pupil maximums are reccomended this is not implemented into law as it is in Scotland and Northern ireland.

Furthermore, setting this legal maximum aligns with educational best practices and safety guidelines followed by other progressive education systems globally. It's time for us to take action and protect the future of our children and the sustainability of our educational practices.

Please sign this petition to urge the Welsh government to take immediate action and set a legal maximum class size for workshop environments. Let's ensure that each student receives the attention, guidance, and safety they deserve.
