SEIU Local 1021 Members Demand A Fair Election

The Issue

The most recent SEIU 1021 Localwide election was an unfair election. It was the most expensive election ever held by 1021 with the most mistakes, technical flaws and a low turnout. Overall, here are the election flaws:

  • Many members did not receive ballots, despite contacting the number provided.
  • The head of the election company 1021 hired is facing indictment for securities fraud.
  • Election company, hired by 1021, created the computer counting programs the day of the election.
  • The wrong ballots were sent to members.
  • Thousands of “blank ballots” printed & were never accounted for.
  • This was the longest election in history (almost 48 hours) despite spending between 80k - 200k and the machines broke down in the middle of the election (from 7 machines to 1 machine).
  • Close to 1,400 ballots were returned, but no one knows where those ballots are or which members were denied the right to vote.
  • There are close to 58,000 1021 members localwide, but only close to 3,400 members voted. The lowest vote turnout in 1021 history.
  • The same issues were experienced during 1021's election back in 2013, but all charges were dismissed by the local, and the international.
