OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS A HOME

Our community deserves sporting facilities that allow our club to grow.

We are asking the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to recognise the need for our club to have a suitable, safe and sustainable home ground.

Our club is a proud part of the local community, providing children, juniors, seniors, families and volunteers with the opportunity to participate in sport, build friendships, develop skills and be part of something positive.

However, our current ground is no longer large enough to meet the needs of our growing club.

The limited size of the existing ground means we cannot accommodate all of the fields required for our players and teams. The lack of adequate lighting also significantly limits our ability to train and operate safely outside daylight hours.

We need a ground that allows our club to grow.

This is not simply about wanting better facilities.

It is about having the basic infrastructure required for our club to operate effectively and provide opportunities for the growing number of people who want to participate.

Serpentine Jarrahdale is a rapidly growing community, and sporting facilities need to grow alongside the population.

OUR BIGGEST CONCERN IS OUR CHILDREN

We are deeply concerned about what happens if our club is unable to secure a suitable home within the Shire and is forced to look elsewhere.

For many of our young players, our club is more than just a place to play sport.

It is where they have made friendships, built confidence, learned teamwork, found mentors and developed a sense of belonging within their community.

If our club is forced to leave the Shire, we worry about the children who may no longer have the opportunity to participate in our sport close to home.

Not every family has the time, ability or resources to travel significant distances several times a week for training and games.

For some children, the loss of their local sporting club could mean losing much more than a place to play.

It could mean losing their opportunity to participate, connect with other children and feel like they belong to their community.

We believe every child in Serpentine Jarrahdale should have the opportunity to participate in sport without having to leave their local community to do so.

WHAT WE HAVE NOW

It is important to understand the facilities our club is currently working with and the challenges faced by our players, families and volunteers.

Despite these limitations, our club continues to operate and provide opportunities for our community.

At present, we have:

No secure venue: Our facilities are vulnerable to repeated break-ins, theft and damage, creating ongoing security and financial concerns for the club.

Inadequate storage: Our storage location has ongoing leaking issues, resulting in damage to club stock and equipment year after year.

No proper change rooms: We currently have one basic room with road-facing windows and coat hooks installed, which is expected to function as our changing facility.

Inadequate toilet facilities: Our toilet facilities are affected by issues including septic overflow and periods where the facilities are completely out of order.

Inadequate canteen facilities: The canteen has experienced issues including mouse droppings, inadequate food storage and an ageing stove that must be manually lit. We have had to use temporary arrangements, including running a cable to a deep freezer to keep food secure, only for the power to be disconnected frequently.

Unsuitable grounds after rain: The playing grounds can become uninhabitable following rainfall and require appropriate drainage works to make them consistently useable.

Insufficient space: The current ground cannot accommodate all of the fields required to support our growing club.

These are not simply matters of convenience.

They directly affect our ability to safely operate, accommodate our members, protect club property and provide the level of facilities our growing community deserves.

WE COULD BE A YEAR-ROUND COMMUNITY SPORTING CLUB

With a suitable home ground, our club has the opportunity to become a year-round community sporting club.

Our club already provides opportunities for juniors, seniors and women, and a suitable facility would allow us to expand those opportunities beyond our regular season.

We could offer activities such as Harmony 9s and summer touch, giving children, young people and adults the opportunity to stay active, connected and involved in their community throughout the year.

A suitable home ground would allow our facilities to continue serving the community well beyond the regular sporting season, creating opportunities for participation, volunteering, social connection and community events throughout the year.

With the right facilities, we have the potential to provide a place for our community to come together all year round.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR

We respectfully ask the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to:

Recognise that our current ground and facilities are insufficient for the needs of our growing club.

Identify and secure a suitable long-term home ground for our club within the Shire.

Ensure the ground is large enough to accommodate the fields required for our current and future teams.

Provide appropriate lighting to allow safe training and participation outside daylight hours.

Address drainage, parking, toilets, change rooms, storage, canteen and security requirements as part of long-term facility planning.

Consider current and projected participation numbers when planning future sporting infrastructure.

Consider the impact that losing a local sporting club would have on children and families within the community.

Recognise the year-round community value that our club could provide through juniors, seniors, women's sport, Harmony 9s, summer touch and other community activities.

Work collaboratively with our club to develop a practical, long-term solution.

Invest in sporting facilities that will support our community for many years to come.

WE SUPPORT:

A dedicated home ground for our club.

Adequate fields for our growing participation.

Appropriate lighting and facilities.

Safe and suitable change rooms, toilets, parking and storage.

Facilities that can support our club year-round.

Long-term investment in local sport.

Keeping local children involved in sport within their own community.

Sporting infrastructure that grows with our community.
