Sequoia Student Driver Safety Initiative
The Issue
Sequoia Student Driver Safety Initiative
My name is Dylan Shelley and I have been a Special Education teacher for 13 years at Sequoia High School. I started a Drivers Education Program for Sequoia students who need help with passing the CA Permit test. I have taught students with IEP’s and many students who know they would struggle passing this test on their own.
The class starts at 7:20 am. Students are required to come on time and can only miss 3 of 30 classes. We are seeking $10,000 to fund a year long drivers education program that can serve up to 140 students. I was told that there is no money to fund the program. Yet, students were ready to go, so I taught the class for free, and am currently doing so.
I have completed the first 30 hours of the Fall Class, and I plan to do another starting on October 5.
Please join me in signing this petition to help these deserving students who are getting up early to accomplish an important life goal. Our streets will be safer with well trained and licensed drivers.
Please let our Principal Sean Priest know that we are requesting the funding of this program (2 classes per semester, 4 per year). Contact him at Spriest@seq.org or call at 650-367-9780 Extension 60010. Please give every Sequoia Student access to quality Drivers Education, regardless of their ability to pay. Thank you.
