Hi all, we've reached 779 signatures on this petition—thank you so much for your support!
Big News for Equestrians for Change! 🐎✨
Today, we took our message straight to the top, and we are officially BEING HEARD! 📣
I had a deeply productive, incredibly positive phone call with David Collett, the Western Field Operations Manager for Virginia State Parks. Park leadership is stepping up to work with us, not against us.
Here are the massive wins from our conversation:
👉 High-Visibility Signage: DCR acknowledged that the current tiny trail signs aren't cutting it. They are open to designing and installing larger, clear trailhead signs explaining the rules of the trail. They will have text that explains who yields to whom.
These signs will be constructed right here at PSP, so the task is budget friendly and feasible enough to move forward with implementation immediately.
👉 Public Safety Review: Our incident details are being handed directly to the Chief of Public Safety to look at speed controls and user conflicts systematically.
The hope is that it will help park officials identify specific user groups that are contributing to the dangers on the trail. The overall goal of the DCR is to provide a safe park for all users.
👉 Seat at the Table: We have been formally invited to bring our 777 signature petition to the Friends of Pocahontas State Park board meeting on October 20th!
For too long, horse riders have been underrepresented in park planning. Leadership explicitly told me today: "We don't know what we don't know because we haven't had someone who knows step up."
Well, we are stepping up now. 💪
I have created a sign in sheet for the meeting for equestrians and other supporters to sign. I will introduce these signatures into public record under New Business at the meeting.
This can also serve as a list of potential volunteers that can step up and help become a part of the park's activities .
What’s Next?
We need to keep this momentum skyrocketing before our October 20th meeting! If you haven't signed the petition yet, Please sign. Share this post, invite your barn mates to this page, and let's turn these 777 signatures into 1,000.
Thank you, DCR, for listening. Let's make Virginia trails safe for everyone—horses, hikers, and riders alike. 🌲❤️
