Folks asking , "Why can't you ride again?"

The risk is not in the act of riding, JoJo is smooth as silk. The danger is in the risk of a fall , any fall, auto accident, etc that causes sudden jerking movement or whiplash effect of my neck. I sustained a cervical spinal cord injury when i was thrown to the ground. My spinal cord is pressing against the spinal canal causing decreased sensation and loss of some motor function in my arms hands and legs. My balance has been affected. Because the injury is high, I can only sense where my feet are with my eyes. The nerves that control my brain knowing where my legs and feet are have been compromised.

Any further injury i m told will likely extend the injury and cause permanent loss of use of my arms and legs. The spine surgeon documented this in my medical record with the recommendation that I not engage in horseback riding or any high risk physical activities again due to high risk of severe spinal cord damage and paralysis.

So that's where i'm at, with a 30% chance that the damage will increase even if i have no further injury. What would you do?? Would you risk permanent paralysis to ride one more time?

Believe me, i'm tempted.

But if i did and i did cause further injury, insurance wouldn't cover me because i went against medical advice. It's quite a difficult diagnosis to accept, that s for sure. I haven't had time to really wrap my head around it having just had this news given to me 1 week ago today. But I'm trying to keep this from happening to another equestrian.

I'm standing up, reporting my accident and injuries, and asking that equestrian safety concerns be addressed.
