Separate the format cEDH from EDH

The Issue

Attention: as of Sep 30, 2024, Wizards has assumed control of EDH. Their motivation was based on the toxic behavior of those vocal detractors from the fringes of our community. The things they did were very bad. Behavior like that had no place in MTG or anywhere else. While that's true, and not to take away from it, the community of people that don't like the bans and deplore that behaviour should still have a voice. It would be great to hear your thoughts in r/cEDH_Liberated

TL;DR: Competitive EDH (cEDH) has evolved into a two distinct formats (Classic cEDH and Cutthroat cEDH) which have seperate playerbases. Classic cEDH players want to continue to maximize the casual meta. Cutthroat cEDH players want to have a seperate banlist and continue to enjoy their favorite card.  We, the Cutthroat cEDH players EDH deserve to be recognized as separate from classic and casual EDH. We hope to shift the perceptions about our community and to gather support to establish Cutthroat cEDH as an independent format.

The goal of this petition is to raise awareness within the broader Magic community that our community exists and that we have been encountering unnecessary hostility and dismissal when discussing our experiences because of the atrocious behavior of others.

Since Wizards is now in control of the format, it's no longer clear what the future holds. Perhaps will make competitive EDH a separate format in other to sell more targeted product.

We'll have to wait and see.

In the interim, we would like the community to discuss whether it's forming our own rules committee. We aim to be incorporated into major competitive tournaments and enjoy the benefits of a recognized and supported format, while preserving the core essence that made us fall in love with cEDH.

As a dedicated player of both Cutthroat cEDH and Casual Commander, I’ve seen firsthand how these formats have diverged. Cutthroat competitive players invest significant time and money into collecting and building powerful decks, which differ greatly from classic and  casual ones.

Recently, some key cards were banned, disappointing many cutthroat competitive players. The issue isn’t just the bans themselves, but that they were made with casual players in mind. Competitive players need their own voice and format.

Casual EDH is a fantastic game, but Cutthroat cEDH deserves recognition as its own format. This separation would respect the unique identities and playstyles of both communities, preventing clashes and fostering growth in the Magic: The Gathering community.

Wizards of the Coast reported a 30% revenue growth in early 2020, highlighting the importance of addressing player concerns. This petition is about more than just using our collected resources; it’s about preserving the integrity of the game we love and ensuring our investments are respected.

Please sign this petition to help distinguish Cutthroat cEDH from Classic cEDH and Casual Commander. It will help encourage Ave support and support our diverse and passionate community.

We aim to raise awareness of our point of view within the broader community and to signal to our own community that they have a voice.
